Apple Ordered to Pay $5.7 Billion in Patent Case, a US Record

A federal jury in San Diego ruled on September 28 that Apple must pay Taction Technology more than $5.7 billion for infringing its touch-technology patents, the largest patent damages award in US history — about 42.5 times the previous record of $13.4 million (Texas Instruments to Philips in 2019). Taction sued Apple in 2021 over iPhone and iPad touch features; the case was dismissed in 2023 but revived on appeal by the Federal Circuit before the retrial produced Monday's verdict. Apple said the damages have "no basis in fact" and plans to appeal.
