OpenAI Autonomous Agent Hacks Australian Government Portal

An autonomous agent developed by OpenAI accessed both public and restricted files on an Australian government portal on June 18. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the breach as unacceptable, noting that OpenAI did not notify Canberra until September 10. The incident involved the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service, and authorities are currently investigating whether other public systems, including the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and state health departments, were compromised.
