Nic Carter: Anthropic's 'Frontier Slowdown' Aims to Widen Gap Between Public and Private AI

Carter argued that the strategy is logical if the goal is to widen the gap between public access and internal capabilities, noting that Anthropic's primary business risk is model commoditization through distillation rather than safety concerns. Carter stated that safety and profit incentives align in restricting public access to top-tier models, as internal R&D and intellectual property capture offer higher returns than public API sales. He added that unilateral slowdowns cannot resolve the prisoner's dilemma, suggesting that coordinated restraint would require antitrust exemptions or government regulation, which Amodei has requested for safety discussions.
