Japan to Implement 20% Crypto Tax by 2028 Amid Regulatory Overhaul
Japan is undergoing a two-year restructuring of its cryptocurrency regulatory framework. The Act on Partial Revision of the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act and the Payment Services Act was enacted on July 15, 2026, and promulgated on July 23. This legislation shifts the regulation of crypto transactions from the Payment Services Act to a new framework, with a 20% tax rate on crypto gains scheduled for implementation by 2028.
