Cosmos Hub Outage Highlights Blockchain Consensus Mechanisms

Cosmos Hub recently experienced a 25-hour outage after validators halted operations to prevent the outflow of funds stolen from a governance attack on Neutron. The attack involved unauthorized changes to contract administrators via a governance proposal. To mitigate the impact, validators representing over one-third of the voting power stopped the network. Recovery was achieved after over two-thirds of validators agreed to a software patch (Gaia v28.3.0) that executed a one-time state change to move stolen ATOM to a community-managed multi-sig address. The incident underscores that decentralization does not guarantee 100% uptime, as consensus relies on validator coordination to maintain network liveness and state integrity.
