Intel executive predicts quantum-classical hybrid computing era

Intel executive Lip-Bu Tan stated that quantum computers will emerge as a third class of processors, working alongside CPUs and GPUs to handle specific computational tasks. Speaking at the .conf26 conference, Tan highlighted that while GPUs and CPUs have defined the eras of AI training and inference, future systems will integrate quantum chips. Despite industry concerns over slow progress, Intel continues to invest in quantum technology, focusing on error correction and applications. The company is currently addressing cryogenic infrastructure challenges, with Intel Labs developing silicon spin-qubit devices like Tunnel Falls and cryogenic control chips like Horse Ridge II. Competitors such as IBM and Microsoft are also targeting commercialization by 2029.
