Sakana AI releases Fugu Ultra v2 and Fugu Max

Tokyo-based AI firm Sakana AI (Sakana AI) announced the release of Fugu Ultra v2 and Fugu Max on September 11. These models utilize an orchestration structure to dynamically coordinate multiple specialized AI models. Fugu Ultra v2 outperformed models like Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.1 and OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra in several coding and task-based benchmarks, though it did not lead in every category. Fugu Max, which incorporates models such as NVIDIA's (NVIDIA) Nemotron series, focuses on cost-efficiency with pricing significantly lower than competitors like Claude Sonnet 5 and GPT-5.6 Terra. The models are available via an OpenAI-compatible API.
