Google Recycles DDR4 from Retired Servers to Address Memory Shortages
Google is addressing the AI industry's shift from compute-constrained to memory-constrained environments by recycling DDR4 components from retired servers. Nikhil Cherian, Senior Director of Supply Chain Infrastructure at Google, stated that the company has developed custom hardware adapters to integrate legacy DDR4 modules into modern AI servers. With high-performance memory accounting for approximately 75% of AI server material costs, Google is also optimizing its latest TPU ASIC designs to reduce memory demand.
